Project Description

Developing Future Skills

Winner: Machmade Ltd

The Machmade team in their office

Local family-run Machmade won the Developing Future Skills award at the 2018 Knowsley Business Awards. The plumbing, heating and drainage company operates out of a purpose-built unit on Knowsley Business Park and employs more than 60 local people.

Since its beginnings in 1987, the business has gone from strength to strength and five years ago made the decision to organically grow the business from within through the recruitment of and investment into apprentices.

When joining the company, new apprentices are allocated a dedicated mentor and are placed with experienced staff to be trained and developed. This ensures that Machmade can guarantee the quality of its workforce and provide a high quality service for its customers. This approach has proven successful as 10 out of the 11 apprentices recruited over the past five years are now in permanent jobs with the company.

Machmade has also received national recognition for its commitment to apprentices after winning the North West Regional Apprenticeship Award in 2017 and being named one of England’s Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers included on the Centrica Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer.

“We were absolutely thrilled to win at the Knowsley Business Awards. Our apprenticeship scheme is key to the success of our business, in order to maintain our ambitious growth targets. We will continue to work closely with Knowsley Council to ensure we attract the right people from the local area.”

Phil Allen, General Manager, Machmade Ltd
